WHAT IS A SANCTUARY?

A Sanctuary is a place where animals can come to live and be protected for the rest of their lives. It's a safe haven where they receive the very best care possible.

Animals are not bought, sold, bred, traded, used for commercial purposes, or mistreated in any way. They are given every opportunity to behave naturally in a wonderfully loving environment.

DOES ASA HAVE A SANCTUARY?

IF I KNOW OF AN ANIMAL IN NEED OF RESCUE WHO DO I CONTACT?

Please contact the sanctuaries directly which provide permanent care for species in need of help. You can use our list of accredited sanctuaries to find one near you. Please call or email before showing up with an animal! Each sanctuary has its own specialty, and some sanctuaries may not handle the kind of animal you’re trying to find a home for, or may not have room at the moment.

COULD I START MY OWN SANCTUARY?

Of course! But a lot goes into starting a sanctuary. You can’t just start bringing wild animals into your home without the proper permits and licenses. Read Sybil Erden’s excellent article, Why Start an Animal Sanctuary? We also have a downloadable PDF Sanctuary Startup Guide.
